The 4-Legged Heart of the Park

Washington Square Park is one of the most vibrant and welcoming green spaces in the neighborhood—and if you’ve spent any time here, you’ve probably noticed one of the biggest reasons why: the dogs.

From playful morning meetups to relaxed afternoon strolls, dogs bring energy, connection, and joy to the park. For many visitors, seeing familiar pups or discovering new ones is part of what draws them here. This dynamic has even been highlighted in community conversations and media, including a documentary exploring how the visible presence of dogs can signal a healthy, well-used, and socially connected park space—one that is actively meeting the needs of its community. As the park's advisory council, we're proud of that!

At the same time, it’s important to be clear: Washington Square Park is not a designated dog park. It is a shared, historic public space used by people of all ages and needs—families, students, seniors, picnickers, and more. That’s why responsible dog ownership is essential to maintaining the balance that makes this space so special.

Chicago Pet Laws

For the safety of all, each park user must visit in accordance with following City of Chicago regulations:

1. Chicago Municipal Code 7-12-030: "Each owner shall keep and maintain his animal under restraint;"

2. Chicago Municipal Code 7-12-200: "Each owner of any dog, cat or ferret four months of age or older shall have the animal vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian of the owner's choice."

3. Chicago Park District Code B10: "No person owning or being custodian or having control of any animal shall cause or permit such animal to enter or remain on Park District property, except in areas designated by the General Superintendent as “Dog Friendly Areas”, a domestic animal may be brought into a park so long as such animal is continuously restrained by a leash not exceeding six feet in length.

4. Chicago Municipal Code 7-12-420: "Removal of Excrement - No person shall appear with a pet upon the public ways or within public places or upon the property of another, absent that person's consent, without some means for the removal of excrement; nor shall any person fail to remove any excrement deposited by such pet."

5. Chicago Municipal Code 7-12-100: "Excessive animal noise prohibited - It shall be unlawful for any person who owns, controls, has possession of or is charged with the responsibility for caring for any dog or other animal to allow such animal to make excessive noise in a manner that unnecessarily disturbs the comfort, quiet, peace or repose of any other person in the vicinity, at any time of the day or night."

In summary, being a responsible Chicago pet owner is simple: keep your pet on a leash, vaccinate them, and clean up after them so that everyone can enjoy the park safely!

Dogs - Keep Your Humans Leashed, Please!

Leashing isn’t just about following the rules—it’s about preventing avoidable risks.

While the park has perimeter fencing, it includes multiple open access points, gaps, and low barriers that dogs can easily pass through. Unleashed dogs can quickly enter surrounding streets, putting themselves and others at risk of serious harm.  In a park this active, a leash is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep everyone, especially your dog, safe.

Leashing also help owners:

  • Prevent unwanted interactions with other dogs or people

  • Keep dogs away from picnics and shared food areas

  • Monitor what dogs may try to eat, including potentially harmful plants, mulch, or debris
